Style is a form of self-care that empowers
"Style is a form of self-care that empowers women" is the topic I am chatting to the fabulous Abbey Booth about on this week's podcast; It's Got Pockets. The episode drops tomorrow at 6am and is just blink stinking brilliant.
We talk about the power of personal style, a form of self-care that empowers women; about it being one of the many items we have in our toolkit that when we access it becomes part shield, part superpower.
Not in a hashtag outfit of the day, get dressed with me kinda of way.
In a “I’m dressing for the day I want to have” kind of way.
Because how we show up on the outside changes how we feel on the inside.
It’s not about looking polished for other people. It's not about other people.
It’s about feeling like you’ve got your own back before the day even starts. It's about knowing your power card and accessing it. It's taking control of your own messenging and how you show up, how you present to the world.
Last week when I was in Madrid (darling) delivering a rather juicy Women in Leadership programme to a group of fabulous humans (did I mention I designed and curated said programme and it's really brilliant), as I got off the plane, one of the said fabulous humans grabbed me and said "It's Sarah isn't it, I recognised you from your glasses."
My glasses, now also my brand, have become one of my points of recognition, it's how I create my own standout in a noisy room and they are also my shield (I'm thinking X-Men stylie). When I put on my presenting glasses they remind me that I am blinking brilliant and I can do this and I step into my power.
Most women I know are carrying a lot; leading businesses, running businesses, sorting family, wondering what they even stand for anymore, considering what they want to do next whilst (obviously) holding up the bloody sky.
And somewhere in all of that, we forget we’re allowed to put ourselves on the list. It’s about feeling like you on your terms and it can begin with how we dress, how we show up to the world.
This isn’t about fashion. It's about the 360 approach to who we are and what we stand for and being in control of own message. It's about being confident. Grounded. Ready to face whatever’s coming. Dress like the woman you’re becoming.
And it can all begin with the simple ritual of donning a fabulous pair of wide-leg trousers with pockets - because pockets are life, aren't they?
